Information and communication technologies (ITC) are having a growing economic and social impact. The political decision-makers are trying to create the necessary conditions for the new technologies to be quickly integrated into daily social and economic life. As a result, there is a need for statistics over a wide range of topics specific to the information society.

Since 2002, regular surveys have been carried out to collect data relating to the human and financial R&D resources at businesses with less than 10 employees from the main sectors considered to be active in R&D. A second set of surveys considers public bodies with research activities, organisations with research activities mainly funded by the public authorities and also higher education bodies stating that they carry out research activities.

The Community innovation survey (CIS) represents the main source of data on innovation. Its purpose is to provide comparable data across the Community.
